About The Author :
I was born into a large family, 10 children, to be exact. I am the fourth oldest, among my brothers and sisters. In our family, growing up, there was love for one another, yet there was also, I guess, the sense of what is mine is mine. We didn’t have a great deal, but what we had, we held dear. Each one of us did graduate high school, thanks to our mother, and found our own path in life. We, for many years, drifted apart in all different directions. Today, we enjoy the closeness we have with one another.
At age 17, while still in high school, I went to work in a textile factory. Within one year I had accumulated such great wealth in that factory, (ha, ha) that I got married. It was in the same factory where I met my wife, of 27 years. So I guess I did obtain a vast wealth there and for 6 years I continued working at the same location. At 23 years of age I joined the United States Navy. For the next 20 years, with my wife and three children in tow, us nomads journeyed from place to place, never truly having a home to speak of. A few years here, a year there, our nomadic children endured these hardships. So many different schools, and to leave your friends behind, it was hard on them. Needless to say my wife, I knew it must also be hard on her, but never once did she complain about where we were going.
I know exactly how the warriors of olde must have felt when they too went off to battle. You leave behind those you love, not knowing if you fell in battle would they be taken care of? Somehow, we get past that, and go into uncertain battles. Until it is over, and you are standing upright, do you think about what could have happened? Believe me, fear finds its way inside, but you don’t show it, not to any, you just go on as if nothing even happened. I don’t care how big a man or woman you think you are, you can see it in their faces, the fear of what could have been. You carry it with you always, or you cross that fine line of what is real and not real, you die inside. No longer do you sustain the meaning behind a living person, to you, they are not real any more, it is just a game, no different from a video game. Those, you had to be very vigilant of, because they would turn on you, even on themselves, and commit suicide. It is all part of playing soldier. It is a very hard life indeed.
